The most popular type of shed is probably the 10x12 size - simply because it is big enough to store all of your gardening equipment and kids toys but able to be erected by as little as 2 people. But before you start building your shed, you need to make sure you know what you are doing and plan it properly.

1) You may think this first tip is a no brainer, but you see too many people buying prefabricated plastic sheds to skip a bit of work. The truth of the matter is it looks ugly and is not as durable as wood, not to mention the fact that you cannot customize a prefabricated shed.

2) When you are choosing the wood for your shed, be sure to get wood that has already been weather-treater, because this will prolong the life of your shed by protecting it from the elements.

3) Use a low maintenance but highly effective and long lasting roofing material. Options that you can consider are hardy plank siding, asphalt shingle or vinyl siding.

4) Will you need an electricity source in your shed? If so, make sure you plan for this when building it. It can be expensive and complicate to install skylights, so if you want your shed to be nice and bright inside, maybe solar powered lights would be an option.

5) Get your trusses pre-made. You will find this quicker and easier than constructing them yourself but if you are really strapped for cash this is an option but it will take you longer. You should find building your new 10x12 shed an enjoyable and rewarding experience. For it to be rewarding however you must not overlook the important aspects of shed building.
